Vancouver Island May 2008
Clayoquat Sound

 

Day 1, May 19th 2008. Launched from boat ramp in Tofino paddled Clockwise around Meares Island to Wood Ilet. Approx. Distance paddled 16nm. It was rainy. Wind Blowing 20 knots from the southwest.

1st night Camp Wood Islet. Due to the tide we had to make camp high up in the forest canopy.

Day 2, May 20th 2008. We finished our circumnavigation of Meares Island and made camp at southeast side near Rassier Pt. The wind easied and sun came out.

A Campsite at HeelBoom Bay, Meares Island. There was a Cabin in back.

Day 3, May 21st 2008. Due to 35 knot Northeast wind, I decided it was best we stayed on Vargas Island. We dried all our damp gear and explored. I rmember looking west out across Father Charles Channel and seeing the sea explode over the reefs.

Day 4, May 22nd 2008. We padded from Vargas Island to up to Shelter Inlet. We had intended to camp at a at an established campsite on the southwest side of Obstruction Island along Sulfur Passage. We explored in there but neglected to explore a cove where the campsite was located. We ended up paddling further north up Shelter Inlet until we Lisa spoted a batch of beach on the mainland side.

4th Day,paddled 25nm to a spot in Shelter Island.

Day 5, May 23rd 2008. We had a short,(well earned), paddle from Shelter Inlet to Good Sand Beach. The sky was clear and it got very warm.

Days 6 & 7, May 24th 2008. We paddled from Good Sand Beach, around the outside of Flores Island to Whitesands Cove. We had great condition with gentle 3' to 4' swells. May 25th Lisa rested, while I hiked the trails on Flores Island.s
